Stones at Imperial Stone Marble & Granite
Since the beginning of time, nature, with the help of pressure and the elements, has been mixing minerals to create natural works of art. Man has, since its creation, been using these natural palettes and building materials to make them even more amazing. From the Limestone pyramids of Egypt, to the colossal travertine forum of the Romans, to the timeless marble floors of the Vatican, to the Carrara sculptures of Michelangelo, natural stone has been there to enhance our homes, our art and our perception of beauty.
New quarrying technologies creating an innumerous array of colors and textures has provided Imperial Stone Marble and Granite the opportunity to offer:
Marble:
Marble began its life as limestone. Time, pressure, and the elements transformed it into marble. The temperature and pressure have destroyed fossils and sedimentary traces present in the original rock, hence, creating its relative soft look and homogeneity. The low index of light refraction allows light to penetrate several millimeters into the stone before being scattered out, resulting in the characteristic “waxy” look that gives life to floors, vanity tops, fireplaces and hearths.
Granite:
Granite is an igneous rock and is formed from cooled magma. The different array of quartz, minerals, and rock intrusions give the stone its beautiful look and overall feel. The texture of the stone is created by its crystalline composition. Different minerals and impurities give the stone its striking array of colors. Granite’s durability and longevity make it ideal for heavily trafficked floors, kitchen countertops, tables, bar tops or heavily used surfaces.
Quartzite:
Quartzite is a hard stone that was originally sandstone. It was transformed by time, heat, and pressure changes in the tectonic plates. The stone recrystallized along with other materials to form an interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals. Mineral sediments are what give this stone its look and texture, as well as its color. Quartzite is very resistant to chemical and heat weathering making it a suitable stone for kitchen countertops, tables, bar tops, or heavily used surfaces.
Onyx:
Onyx is a banded variety of chalcedony, a form of quartz. Some colors of onyx are derived from agate and other semi-precious stones. Its composition allows for a high level of translucency and its arrangement allows for a striking color scheme. Onyx is suitable for vanity tops, tabletops, bars, and any see-through applications.
Limestone:
Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the mineral calcite. Limestone often contains variable amounts of silica, clay, silt, sand, and in many cases sediment of marine organisms. All these elements give the stone its homogeneity, natural look, and softness. Limestone is used for “minimalist” applications for flooring, vanities, and fireplaces.
Travertine:
Travertine is a natural stone that started its life as a limestone. The elements of pressure and time, plus the added ingredient of water have transformed and recrystallized the stone into travertine. Underground water springs all over the world have created one of the most appealing stones in the market today. This appeal of travertine has been with us from the time of Babylonia and the great Roman Empire. The variety of colors, textures and finishes gives travertine it’s popular allure. Travertine can be used for flooring, vanity tops, fireplaces, pool decks, pavers or as decorative stones.
Sandstone:
Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-size mineral or rock grains. Most sandstone is comprised of quartz and/or feldspar because these are the most common minerals in earth's crust. Like sand, sandstone may be any color, but the most common colors are tan, brown, yellow, red, gray, and white. Most sandstones are used for flooring and paving applications.
